The new State Premier, Mike Baird, wants to clean up New South Wales. Let’s ask him to start with cleaning up NSW gun laws by restoring them to honour the ‘Port Arthur Agreement on Firearms’.

In 1996 a lone gunman, using semi-automatic weapons at the Port Arthur historic site in Tasmania, shot dead 35 people and injured 20 others.
The public outrage in response to this tragedy was unprecedented.
As a result, each State and Territory made a commitment – known as the ‘Port Arthur Agreement on Firearms’ - to implement laws that included bans on specific types of firearms, nationwide registration, the need to show a genuine reason for owning a firearm, and basic license requirements.
Over time, due to pressure from a well-financed gun lobby, the commitment to this agreement has been watered down, exposing all of us to greater gun violence.
In the last decade, New South Wales has breached the ‘Port Arthur Agreement’ in a number of ways. These include: ‘try before you buy’ legislation, which allows a person unlicensed and without police checks to shoot a semi-automatic handgun (also known as s.6B); removing the 28-day police check for obtaining a firearm; allowing minors to possess a firearm; allowing license holders to obtain additional firearms without requiring them to show good reasons why; removing the requirement to revoke a licence if someone is on a good behaviour bond; allowing recreational shooting in National Parks.
The changes to our gun laws have been in the interests of the recreational pursuits of a few. They have not been in the interests of public safety.
Their hobby. Our lives.

Petition to the Premier, The Hon Mike Baird
We, the undersigned, alarmed at living in a State where there are now an average of 20 drive-by shootings a month and a public shooting in Sydney every 3 days, are seeking action to strengthen NSW gun laws.
We demand the following from the State Government:
- That NSW gun laws be restored to honour the 1996 ‘Port Arthur Agreement On Firearms’
- That the legislative loophole allowing semi-automatic handguns to be legally available be closed.
- That the Premier pledges, on behalf of the Government, to do no more deals with the Shooters Party which will weaken gun laws in NSW.
We can’t have weak gun laws – our lives depend upon it.
